Tals interaccions s\u00f3n dif\u00edcils de comprendre amb l\u2019enfoc reduccionista dels &#8220;postulats de Koch&#8221;, que es van encunyar per determinar quan un organisme en particular podia ser considerat responsable de un estado de malaltia. El resultat de la infecci\u00f3 amb un organisme concret no sempre equival a la malaltia. A dem\u00e9s dels antecedents gen\u00e8tics, la intersecci\u00f3 de les influencies dels organismes que coinfecten (des de la microflora simbi\u00f2tica als pat\u00f2gens virulents) influencien el resultat de la infecci\u00f3. I, degut a la seva capacitat per orquestar la inmunoregulaci\u00f3 del hoste i les infeccions cr\u00f2niques, els helmints proporcionen exemples del potencial de les co-infeccions en alterar el diagn\u00f2stic, el curs i el resultat dels processos de malaltia.
